What is DMI?

Dynamic Movement Intervention (DMI) is a comprehensive intervention used by physical and occupational therapists to treat children with gross motor impairments. Visit the DMI website for more info: www.dmitherapy.com

Children diagnosed with any type of motor delay, including conditions such as; Down Syndrome, Cerebral palsy, global developmental delay, hypotonia, chromosomal abnormalities/genetic disorders, spinal cord lesions, or acquired brain injury, may benefit from DMI motor intervention. Children at risk, such as those who are born prematurely, can also benefit from this therapy due to the strong neuroplastic changes that this treatment stimulates within the developing brain.

After a brief assessment, the therapist will identify areas of potential growth, which will guide treatment. The therapist will manipulate the child to encourage novel movements in a more typical pattern. Exercises are repeated until these movements become automatic, which results in improved balance and function. Exercises are conducted on a tabletop or the floor based on the child’s abilities. DMI exercises involve movement against gravity, progressively more challenging support, provocation of desired movements, postural and strength challenges.

Gross Motor Skills – Improving gross motor skills of children at least three months old.
Gradual Progression – Continuously increasing the challenge to encourage the child to respond with greater independence.
Alignment and Range of Motion – All exercises focus on optimal alignment and range of motion via functional movements.
Balance – Improving postural control is a common thread through most DMI exercises.

We currently treat ages 0-10 years old.

During therapy, we use specialized DMI equipment, including a therapy table, DMI box set, and various smaller tools to support your child’s progress. We also incorporate NMES/TASES/FES as part of treatment. As our clinic grows, we will be adding more equipment to enhance the therapy experience.

To ensure safe and effective therapy for both your child and myself, it’s important that children receiving hands-on treatment are 45 lbs (20 kg) or under. Safe handling is a key part of therapy, and being transparent about your child’s weight helps me provide the best possible care.

If your child is over this limit, don’t worry – we can still work together! However, some hands-on activities may be adjusted or limited to ensure everyone’s safety.

The Intensive Therapy Model is a rapidly growing medical treatment for children living with neurological and genetic disorders e.g., Cerebral Palsy. Over the past two decades, there has been a shift toward Intensive Therapy and away from more traditional forms of therapy provided to children living with cerebral palsy and other genetic and neurological disorders. Intensive Therapy differs from traditional forms of therapy by increasing the frequency and intensity of children’s therapy sessions. Drawing from a wide variety of treatments such as occupational, speech, and physical therapy, the Intensive Therapy Model ensures that every child receives a combination of intensive therapies that are specifically tailored to the unique physical and intellectual challenges that are posed by neurological disorders.

Booking an appointment is easy! You can:

To ensure fairness to all our clients and staff, we have a strict 24-hour cancellation policy. Cancellations made less than 24 hours before your appointment will incur a 50% charge. We understand that life happens and your child may get sick, but please note that repeated cancellations may result in forfeiting your spot.
